Mosques old and new

With so many places to see and so few holidays to do them in, travellers can often find themselves not knowing what to do or where to go. The North African country of Libya provides the answer to these questions and many more. Libya is the gem of the region and largely unaffected by commercialization meaning that tourists can enjoy the splendour of the terrain and historical remains in relative comfort and discretion.

Libya’s cosmopolitan capital of Tripoli is undoubtedly a top attraction for many visitors and offers the discerning traveller a rich cultural and heritage experience that has been well-documented and preserved the best out of anywhere else in the Mediterranean. Tripoli boasts a plethora of amazing statues and landmarks that will inspire and mesmerize anyone with the opportunity to visit the city. Like most other Arab cities in the world, Tripoli’s skyline is dominated by numerous Mosques all of different shapes and sizes. The Old City or Tripoli Medina has no less than 38 such constructions and is a popular way for those visiting Tripoli to spend their time.

The area’s best known and most frequented Mosque is the Gurgi Mosque, which features breathtaking and elegant architectural designs. Besides the Gurgi Mosque, tourists can explore the likes of the Karamanli and En-Naqah Mosques, which are both interesting and pay a rich tribute to the cultural heritage of this proud nation. Not all of Tripoli’s mosques are grand and overwhelming – there are a number which are so small and insignificant you wouldn’t be able to tell it was a mosque except for the minarets out front indicating the presence of one.
