Since the United Nations dropped sanctions against Libya in 2003, the country has started to receive more and more travellers from abroad eager to discover and explore her fascinating and proud terrain. Libya has a tremendous amount to offer visitors and is blessed with a diverse kaleidoscope of activities and sites for her guests to frequent.

Whether you’re into culture, nature, or shopping, this North African nation has this and much more for you to check out. One of the biggest draw cards particularly for overseas visitors is Libya’s amazing and inspiring cultural heritage; this is displayed throughout the country with many of its cities bearing testimony to an array of well-preserved Roman and Greek ruins and remains. One such stunning architectural masterpiece can be found in the Roman city of Sabratha, which is 65km west of the capital city of Tripoli; the Sabratha Theatre is one of the most sought-after landmarks for visitors to explore as it heralds the majesty of the former Roman Empire quite remarkably. The Sabratha Theatre was built in 190 AD under the rule of Emperor Commodus, and could originally seat 5000 people. Due to the natural disasters that plagued the country, many of the ancient Roman artifacts were destroyed and the theatre was only reconstructed in 1920 by an Italian archaeologist named Giacomo Guidi.

Today, the Sabratha Theatre, thanks to the mammoth rebuilding efforts undertaken by Guidi and others, is once again a supreme and imposing landmark, with the construction being over 3 tiers high, a stage of 43m long and 9m wide, and the backdrop behind the stage rising 20m above the ground. It is one of the country’s top attractions and guarantees to inspire and mesmerize all who are lucky enough to make the visit.
