Trekking Jebel Nafusa
For many years the North African country of Libya has been best known for its often turbulent past, resulting in the United Nations placing sanctions against it. In recent times, however, this proud nation has been working tirelessly to improve its image abroad by highlighting what a magnificent country it truly is and the many exciting activities and landmarks visitors can enjoy during a holiday. It has become more and more apparent that Libya is a beautiful land with many stunning natural spectacles to mesmerize any traveller who frequents her shores.
From the Sahara Desert to the 2000km of pristine Mediterranean Sea coastline, Libya is scintillating and breathtaking, and just waiting to be explored and discovered. Trekking through this wonderful terrain is a terrific way to scope out the territory with many travellers opting for the regions of Jebel al-Akhdar – also known as the Green Mountains - or Jebel Nafusa, not just because these are two of the most scenic areas to hike through, but because the climates are far cooler than in other parts of Libya and therefore better suited for this type of outdoor activity.
The Green Mountains are especially popular amongst those visiting the country because of its incredible fertility and lush terrain; it is a rarity in this largely arid region and it produces cereal, potato, and fruit produce. The Green Mountains have incredible scenery and is also home to the Greek colony of Cyrene, which is located in the Jebel al-Akhdar valley. Those wanting to trek through these areas are advised to work out their own routes as there are very few tour operators able to assist them with this option.
