Tobruk
Mainly known for its controversial history and involvement in the infamous Lockerbie bombings, Libya has begun an amazing transition since UN sanctions were lifted in 2003 to become a tourist haven for eager travellers ready to embark on a journey of a lifetime. Libya is blessed with amazing natural spectacles from its towering mountain ranges to its endless stretches of pristine Mediterranean coastline with visitors able to enjoy just about any water activity under the sun.
The country’s astounding history and stunning architectural landmarks are another fundamental reason why people fall in love with Libya and its close proximity to countries including Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria means that travellers have direct and easy access throughout the region. The warm Arabic hospitality combined with the plethora of magnificent places to visit and explore means that a sojourn through Libya will be a wonderful and pleasant affair. While most are familiar with the capital city of Tripoli, the charming and laidback seaside port of Tobruk is a terrific retreat away from the busier areas of the country. Tobruk is an important centre as it is home to many key industries such as the liquor distilling, flour milling, and soap manufacturing industries.
It is also a city of great historical importance with its sites and artifacts bearing witness to the Italian occupation of 1911, the Australian and German invasions in 1941 during World War Two, following its eventual rescue by the British in December of the same year. The Germans reclaimed the city again in 1942, but the British re-gathered and took the area back later that same year. Today, Tobruk is a pivotal trade and transportation centre and remains one of the continent’s finest seaports.
